What to do if a wasp nest is in your loft

Loft nests are our most common callout in Hertfordshire. Here's exactly what to do — and what to avoid.

A wasp nest in the loft is one of the most common and most concerning problems we deal with across Herts. The good news: with the right response, it's also one of the easiest to treat safely.

How to confirm a loft nest

You usually hear it before you see it. Stand on the upstairs landing on a warm afternoon and listen for a faint scratching, rustling or papery hum from the ceiling.

Other signs:

  • A constant stream of wasps entering one specific spot on the roof from outside
  • Small black specks (wasp droppings) on insulation directly under the nest
  • A drop in temperature at one corner of the loft (a large nest displaces insulation)

Do NOT enter the loft

Opening the hatch creates a sudden airflow change that wasps interpret as a predator attack. We've attended dozens of stings caused by curious homeowners climbing into the loft "just to check".

What we do

  1. External assessment — we identify the entry point from outside the building
  2. Loft entry in full PPE — bee suit, gauntlets, sealed visor
  3. Direct dust application — insecticidal powder into the nest body, not just the entrance
  4. 30-minute exclusion — we ask you to keep windows closed for half an hour, then it's done

The colony dies within 24–48 hours. We can return to physically remove the nest from the loft on request, though it's rarely necessary — once dead, wasp nests don't attract other pests.
