When is wasp season in Hertfordshire? Month-by-month guide
Hertfordshire's wasp problem peaks at very specific times each year. Here's when to expect what — and when to act.
Wasp activity in Herts is highly seasonal. Knowing the calendar means you can spot trouble early and avoid the late-summer rush.
April–May: The queen wakes up
Queens emerge from hibernation in roofs, sheds and log piles. You'll see a single large wasp scouting nest sites. This is the best time to deal with a nest — it's tiny, and one queen lost = one whole colony prevented.
June: First workers appear
The queen has produced her first dozen workers. The nest is golf-ball to tennis-ball sized. Treatment now is cheap and fast.
July: Colony explosion
The nest grows to football size. Wasps are visible everywhere in the garden. Most of our emergency callouts across Hertfordshire begin in early July.
August: Peak danger
The colony hits 5,000+ adults. New queens are produced. This is the most dangerous month — wasps become aggressive, swarm into BBQs, and sting opportunistically. August is our busiest month for emergency wasp control in Herts.
September: Drunk and angry
With brood production ending, workers go searching for sugar — fallen fruit, fizzy drinks, jam. They're sluggish and unpredictable. Sting incidents peak.
October–March: Hibernation
The colony dies off. New queens overwinter in lofts, sheds, and behind curtains. If you find a single live wasp indoors in winter, it's almost always a queen — and where there's one, there's usually 100.
